Epilogue

ILHG 2014 another succes!!

ILHG 2014 another succes!!

ILHG 2014 another success!

Wow, the ILHG is over! And it’s time to write an epilogue. I think the second ILHG went very smooth, we didn't have a lot of hiccups. So I'm happy! And only thanks to you guys, who made it possible again! We were not sure about a sequel. In the end Matthys convinced me we should and now I don't regret it for one bit. I got a lot of good feedback and more than enough to realize we need to keep this event going. I already have new ideas for next year and, luckily, there is still a lot of room for improvement. So now nothing else to do, then express my gratitude to everyone that came over either again or for the first time! THANK YOU!

And I want to thank the people that helped this event come alive: the AMEK Power Team. My special gratitude goes to Oskar ter Mors (instructor Chapter The Hague) for dealing with a lot of administration bullshit and Bjorn van der Klugt for all the driving around and picking up everybody, and, last but not least, Ties for organizing the tournaments!

I want to congratulate all the winners on their victories, well done! Personally I was happy to have proceeded to the next round in the invitational, but stepping out was the best thing I could have done, as I still needed to play guitar that evening and my arm was already dead due to a close encounter with, again, a Swede. I also needed that arm for the Game of Thrones gig. So tough luck, but yeah shit happens all the time. And to be honest, I'm completely out of shape and I was again impressed by the speed and skills you guys laid upon me. The reality is, one just has to look at the ILHG fights and a man cannot but appreciate the fighting talent that we currently have in the community! And I think the Invitational was a huge success and the level of fighting was again superb. Also the open longsword and the women tournament displayed a huge amount of skill. I think you guys are really the role models that draw the people from the community into fighting tournaments and therefore you guys are in fact the living marketing of our art in this modern age.

I was very honoured that the Mexicans came over and apart from that, I'm proud to call them my friends, they also have my respect; marketing and businesswise. Especially Arturo Camargo, who started his own club and organizes a yearly event, which is a great success over there! I think you guys do a hell of a job. Keeping in mind, that you guys don’t have a lot of interaction with European community, training wise, and started relatively late. And look at you guys now! You are rocking! I'm very proud of them and I think in a few years these guys will kick our asses on European soil! I also want to thank all the sponsors that helped out with our event and also seeing you guys in person was again a happy encounter. Finally, I want to thank the younglings from the AMEK the boys that fought in the Kids Dussack Tournament. You guys did awesome. Everyone that saw you guys fight, was amazed. Exiting to look at, good dynamics and technique. Really, you guys are the future of HEMA and seeing you guys fight, well, it just radiates hope for the survival of our art. It's as simple as that.

So that was it I guess! Nothing more to say then that I hope we see you all again next year for ILHG III !

VINCIT QUI SE VINCIT!

About

About

A young man with endless potential, a great charisma and loving character, and one of the most promising HEMA fighters of this century took his own life during Christmas in 2012. He trained in my club and was my student and friend, and of many others. His name was Rory van Noort.

In 2013 we collected our courage and decided that we wanted to organise an event. It was going to be an event in his name and we decided that in the program there should be a Rory memorial Tournament, where all the guys he ever fought in finals and gave him challenges in tournaments would unite and fight each other in his honour.

The first ILHG was a great succes and in many ways exceeded our expectations. This year I hope that all of you will once again join us to celebrate HEMA and all the hero's that fought in the legacy of our ancient forebears and are no longer with us. The event is allready looking more than promising, with confirmed top Instructors from: Sweden, USA, Mexico, Belgium, Germany, Switserland, Canada, Finland, England, The Netherlands, Slovenia and many more.

The concept of this event is not about ego, winning or individualism, but about sharing and enjoying, fighting together and drinking together. But most important of all is learning from eachother and appriciating life to the fullest. Don’t get me wrong; this is not a pussy event, we want everyone who is fighting to fight his best and the best fighter will ultimately win, but it should be about the path that leads to victory more then the victory itself, if that makes any sense. This is exactly what Rory stood for and what I personally learned from him.

We don’t need 300 people at our event, we just want it to be a special unique event where we can enjoy each others company and think about what is in fact really important in this world, which I believe is passion and friendship. You will experience that this event has a special character and a unique atmosphere.

Thursday

Thursday
If you fly in on Thursday, then we will take you to Woodstock in Zandvoort an amazing beachclub that won three years in a row the 'Best Beachclub of the year' award. Palmtrees, good music, sun, sand and awesome people. Here you can unwind, chill, smoke something or enjoy a cold beer. You can also take your nylon wasters and beat the crap out of eachother on the beach or in the sea!

Friday

Friday

As you are used to we will have a special program on Friday, to relax with friends and see something of the Dutch culture and heritage.
This year we will bring you to Leiden, and you have the option to join one of our fun tours through the city.
Leiden a historical city with a lot to see and it's close to the training facility.
You can easily move forth and back as we have fast public transportation between Oestgeest and Leiden.

Saturday

Saturday
Saturday we will have all the tournaments. Except the single handed tournament, which will be on Friday.
We have a Open Longsword, Female Tournament and the Rory van Noort Memorial Invitational Longsword Tournament.

Saturday evening

Saturday evening
Saturday evening we will have a great medieval diner with entertainment and music. If you play an instrument please bring it along.

Workshops

Sunday

Sunday
Sunday we can unwind after the tournaments and get inspired by HEMA specialists from around the globe.
The majority of these instructors run their own clubs and are an inspiration to others. Moreover, they are great fighters in the ring, in mentality as in skill. And all of them are known to provide excellent workshops. We have Solo workshops and Duo workshops and lots of different weapon disciplines. Also there will be demonstrations, lectures and a 'KIDS' Dussack tournament. (7-13 year)

Kids Tournament & Demonstrations

Sunday

Sunday
On Sunday we have apart from workshops, also the Kids Tournament and the Kids Weapon Demonstration.
The young warriors from the AMEK will show their skills in the ring with the Dussack. More over they will display their skills with flowdrills and technique demonstration.

Monday

Monday
Monday is a special Dussack Gaming training day. You don't pay anything extra for it. It's just something we offer on the side. We call them the 'Rory Games' as Rory liked them a lot and also invented quite a few new games. We will have whole teams fighting each other with dussacks In teams of 8-10 we will fight each other and try to win as a team. You only need one person to screw it up for the rest of the team, and the whole team will lose. So I’m sure there will be a lot of flat edge ass spanking going around with the dussacks! Also these games are designed to have fun and practise HEMA at the same time. Last year we had a great group of people playing and I hope that also this year people will take the monday of to fight in the Dussack games!

Sponsors & Prizes

Sponsors & Prizes
We have a lot of sponsors that were willing to help us out with prizes so we have a lot of stuff to hand out.
These are not just for the tournament winners: we will have a Saturday evening raffle for you to have a chance to win an awesome prize which will be revealed on location!

End Word

End Word
Our credo is VINCIT QUI SE VINCIT (he conquers who conquers himself), meaning you have to confront your own fears and inadequacies.., once you have faced these, all other obstacles will fall before you.

May these words linger and grant all of us the strength to challenge our darkest demons and overcome and prevail to fight and live another day…

In the memory of Rory van Noort (1984 – 2012)

I really hope to see you guys here again in Holland and make sure you catch still the early bird!
